Summer Berries are here early
(June 2, 2006) Spring has finally arrived and brought summer with it! We have had some beautiful California weather here lately and the berries love it. We look forward to a long happy harvest season though the summer and into the fall if Mother Nature cooperates. We hope you enjoy them all year. Thanks for the support and the patience as we weathered the winter and spring rains this year.

I can't believe that I ate the whole "box"! Who'd a thunk that a huge/oversized strawberry would taste anything but woody and tasteless? I did! Until I purchased one of your pound boxes, I kept on tasting over and over, thinking that the next berry would prove me right! I was WRONG!
When I returned to get another box, all the Giants were gone! So sad! Did you know that even the white part of the berry on the top, was not only juicy but sweet and "flavourable"! Thanks for producing a FANTASTIC strawberry!
Sing-cerely, Freeman

How has the rain during March and April affected the growing season? Is california still looking to have another record year of strawberry production as predicted by the CAL FARM BUREAU website at the beginning of March?
Is anyone familiar with the recent buyout of Cleugh's, a strawberry processor in Buena Park and how the new Canadian company is doing with the take over?

Thanks for your comments. We are hoping the long term strawberry season will not be affected by the rain. Basically we did lose alot of early production, but look forward to things clearing up this weekend and significant increases in volume beginning next week. The strawberry plants are very hearty. Northern districts may produce a little later than expected - but we look forward to normal production.
Whether or not it turns out to be a record year - is yet to be determined.
Not sure about Cleughs - you might check with our processing affiliate that has a link on our website - Cal Pacific Specialty Foods.

how long will the strawberries in Oxnard be available this summer?

Thanks for asking about strawberries from Oxnard. Typically, we stop harvesting in that district in May. Usually right around Mother's Day the plants get a little tired and begin producing smaller fruit. Our northern districts then take over production since they are just beginning their season in both Santa Maria and Salinas/Watsonville. Hope you enjoy them.

2 tbsp. raspberry vinegar
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
4 tsp. honey
1/4 tsp. salt
8 cups trimmed spinach leaves
1 lb. asparagus spears, blanched and drained
4 tbsp. toasted slivered almonds
Directions
To make dressing: Combine strawberries, juice, vinegar, oil, honey and salt in container of electric blender or food processor. Pulse on and off, dressing should be slightly chunky. Cover and refrigerate. For each serving, measure 2 cups spinach onto each of four plates. Top each with one-fourth of the asparagus and drizzle with about 1/3 cup dressing. Sprinkle with 1 tbsp. almonds. Yields: 4 servings
